Holistic Intervention is Key to Facilitating Whole Body Wellness
by Ian L. Rubinstein, M.P.T.
The physical body tends to be a receptacle for life's traumas that affect us on a day-to-day basis since conception. As trauma affects us, it is either immediately processed and released, or it winds up creating a "knot" that alters our physiological functions. A simple ache or pain in your body may have not-so-simple, far-reaching "root" causes. A root can be defined as an issue or restriction in the body that causes the body to alter its normal function. These interconnected issues can lie anywhere in the body, including in organs, bones, connective tissue/fascia, nervous systems, and energy systems. Energy pathways may be altered, organ functions may diminish, and physical mobility may be hampered. Initially, this issue could be addressed with a simple intervention. However, new incoming traumas will stack themselves upon these existing ones, creating even more complexity, great unrest and multifaceted dis-eases.
Here is an example of just how entangled the body can become. Let us say that a young boy fell on the ice and hurt his tailbone (sacrum). He had headaches and some back pain for a while, but it seemed to fade away. Then, as a teenager he sprained his ankle, which caused him to walk funny, but it, too, "healed" over time. Adulthood arrived and stress seemed to arrive with it. The stress produced some bowel issues (ex: irritability, constipation). This seemed to connect to his back and caused stiffness and limitations. Now, for the cherry on the sundae, he wound up in a car accident. This occurred right after he heard of the passing of his favorite relative. Well, needless to say, his whiplashed neck and grief-burdened chest are producing migraines, which have taken the place of his occasional childhood headaches. So, now his poor body, which was born for greatness, is now attempting to favor, protect, and compensate for a plethora of life's striated issues.
Where and how should a person who contains unresolved restrictions begin the road to facilitative correction? The typical conventional approach recommends medications, but these have the tendency to mask the symptoms for the goal of immediate "relief." A person may also elect surgery, but unfortunately this may result in the removal of necessary tissues, with the originating core issues remaining. A holistic approach involves interventions that respect the body's individual needs. Holistic bodywork may be required to facilitate releases of restrictions through a variety of different body-directed techniques.
1. Craniosacral Therapy - a manual technique utilizing a light pressure at specific locations on the body to release restrictions within the entire central nervous system and all of its connected tissues.
2. Reiki - healing energy that is applied to deficient areas to help the body perform necessary corrections down to the cellular level.
3. Visceral Manipulation - gentle mobilization technique designed to release adhesions and restrictions within the organs and other viscera that have produced compensatory, protective movement patterns.
4. Chinese Energetic Medicine - energetic technique that provides the body with key information necessary for the nervous system to enact the corrections necessary for healing of a multitude of issues.
The bottom line to the intricacy of chronic dis-eases is to utilize an approach that considers all of the possible issues lying deep within the body's layers. Holistic therapeutic regimes have been created to accomplish just such a task. They function as catalysts for the release of restrictions by listening to the individual's body and providing just the right amount of intended physical touch or energy application to facilitate the release process.
These, and many other skilled applications, provide the body with the tools needed to systematically unwind its dis-eases, and restore the functions it once possessed prior to the traumas.
