Flower Power - Can Flower Essences Heal?

by Alfred Scoglio, Certified Flower Essence Practitioner
Not just a cliché

We've all probably heard the 60's cliché "flower power." Actually, hippies of the day may not have realized the profound truth of that expression. Herbs, teas and other substances made from flowers are widely acknowledged as having medicinal and healing qualities. In the 80's and 90's aromatherapy became, and still is, quite popular. Flowers are commonly used in the making of essential oils, pot porri, body lotions, perfumes and even hair care products. What many of us do not know is that there is an even more fundamental therapeutic use of flowers that was discovered about seventy years ago.  In the 1930's an English surgeon trained in homeopathy found that his patients healed quicker when they felt emotionally grounded. By administering a diluted solution of water in which the petals of certain flowers had been soaked, Dr. Edward Bach discovered that his patients changed the way they viewed their own healing process, and in doing so facilitated their physical healing! This amazing discovery led to the use of flower essences today. This therapy is designed to address an individual's emotional and behavioral patterns in the process of healing facilitation. There truly is healing power in flowers.

What are flower essences?

Flower essences are liquid potentized plant preparations that convey the distinct imprint of a specific flower. This imprint or intelligence signature has a direct correlation to our particular vibrational pattern as human beings. Flower essences formulated by Dr. Bach, the Flower Essence Society, and many others are designed to help transform emotions, attitudes and particular behavior patterns which hinder the development of our full potential.

How do flower essences work?

Flower essences are extremely diluted, so their effect on the psyche is not chemical, but vibrational. When prepared correctly from fresh flower petals, flower essences carry the intelligence and vibrational qualities of the flower. Flower essences do not work by modifying behavior from the outside in, but rather they evoke our freedom to make changes from within, by bringing to consciousness basic archetypes already present within our psyche. These archetypes or intelligence patterns serve as a gentle reminder of our true potential. This memory manifests to a realized change over a short period of time. Usually gradual changes occur on an unconscious level. They can often be noticed by others first, and noticed by the client later. Many people report freedom from unwanted habits or attitudes in days or weeks. Herbs and aromatherapy by contrast use flowers and other parts of the plant to bring about changes in the human body on a biochemical level. But flower essences bring about mind/body/spirit changes through their delicate vibrational influence on human consciousness.

How Are Flower Essences Taken?

After a brief consultation with a flower essence practitioner, a dosage bottle with one or more flower essences is prepared for the client. A few drops are taken under the tongue daily as directed.

Some commonly used Flower Essences and their applications are:

Oak emotional and physical strength

Corn for those who do not feel grounded or connected to the earth

Madia for those easily distracted or troubled with mental concentration

Rosemary if absentminded or not fully present or experienced past stress, trauma or abuse

Indian Paint Brush for manifesting creative expression and artistic ideas

Five-Flower Formula (also known as Rescue Remedy) promotes calm and balance in times of duress, emergency or trauma.

The list goes on and on. Basically, if you have a situation you are dealing with, a habit you want to change, or a past issue that affects your well being now, there is probably a flower essence for it.

"I can kind of laugh at things that would have otherwise bothered me." C. B., Hanover

"I was able to connect... when I'd be upset, I'd be able to verbalize it easier with my husband." S. A., Bridgewater

Note : Flower Essences are not intended for the cure or mitigation of disease. If you have a medical condition, please consult your health care professional for advice.
