Natural Power Medicines

Dr. Mincolla

According to a recent University of Arizona study iatrogenesis is the 8th leading cause of death in America accounting for 130,000 deaths per year. Iatrogenesis is defined as physician induced death, or death from doctor error. A growing number of those deaths are specifically the result of prescriptive error. The five year period from 1999 to 2004 saw pharmaceutical related deaths increase from 11,000 to 20,000 annually. None the less we remain a pill driven society. More than 40 percent of our population is currently taking at least one prescription drug and one in six is taking three or more. Now more than ever Americans are in need of good information about safe, effective medicinal options. I'd like to share with you what I consider my top 5 natural power medicines.

Curcurmin (Tumeric): Ground curcurmin seed, or curry as you may know it, has been utilized as a medicine in both the near and far east for over 3,000 years. Nutritional science continues to discover curcurmin's anti-tumor, anti- inflammatory, anti-viral, and pro-cardio effects. In December of 2004 researchers at U.C.L.A. discovered that curcurmin was able to break up human Alzheimer's plaques implanted in mice. In a 2005 article published in the Journal of Cancer Research, researchers at M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston Texas discovered that curcurmin had the ability to stop the spread of human breast and colon cancer cells. I consider curcurmin to be one of the best kept secrets from the world of natural medicine. I advise two 300 mg. capsules per day along with liberal spice use in cooking.

Celery Seed Extract (3nB): Celery seed extract has been used as a high blood pressure medicine for centuries by the Chinese. The ancient Romans used it for high blood pressure and as a hangover remedy. We might do well to follow their lead. High blood pressure kills 50,000 Americans each year and contributes to another 200,000 heart related deaths. Fortunately there are many safe effective new approaches to lowering blood pressure. Anti-ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) peptides work to lower blood pressure hormonally, by relaxing arterial walls and reducing fluid volume. Celery seed extract is an important adjunct to this process. It contains a substance called 3-n-butylpthalide, or 3nB. The 3nB has been shown to lower blood pressure by acting as a diuretic and vasodilator. In other interesting studies, University of Chicago researchers have discovered that it can successfully lower cholesterol in animals. Rutgers University researchers have found that the acetylenics in celery seeds helped prevent the formation of cancerous tumors in mice. In addition, celery seed extract has exhibited inhibiting effects on liver and stomach cancer as well as staphylococcus bacteria. For those dealing with high stress, hypertension, or cancer I suggest 20 drops of the tincture in water three times per day.

Green Tea (EGCG): Green tea has been a popular beverage in China for over 3,000 years. Green tea is not only a satisfying drink but a rich source of medicinal polyphenols. These powerful compounds make green tea a very resourceful medicine. According to a September 2005 article published in the journal Neuroscience, researchers at the University of South Florida reported that a powerful catechin in green tea with the acronym EGCG decreased human amyloid Alzheimer's plaques implanted in mice by 54 percent in a mere 4 months! Green tea has also impressed as an anticancer agent. Researchers at Case Western University recently found that the polyphenols in green tea stopped cancer cells from developing at every stage of life. Animal studies recently performed at the American Health Foundation found that green tea extracts reduced the risk of lung cancer 45 percent. Cardiovascular disease is yet another category where green tea has shined. One landmark Dutch study found that those who consumed the highest amount of tea's polyphenols had a 58% lower risk of dying from heart disease, while another found that the biggest green tea drinkers were 69 percent less likely to have a stroke than those who rarely drank the tea. I recommend 2-3 cups of green tea per day. For those with correlative risk factors I suggest two to three 600 mg. capsules per day.

Holy Basil (ursolic acid): Holy Basil has celebrated as a superior medicinal agent by eastern cultures for centuries. The Chinese used it for stomach spasms, kidney conditions, poor circulation as well as both insect and snake bites. In India it was known as tulsi which translates as the "incomparable one." The Indian Ayurvedic tradition believed holy basil was one of the best herbs to prepare the mind and heart for spiritual growth. The reason of course is that it has an affinity for uplifting the spirits and off setting the negative effects of stress. Recent investigation suggests it is much more than just a great stress medicine. In 2003 a research team lead by Dr. Earl Surwit reported that Holy Basil significantly reduced the fatigue factor for patients undergoing rigorous chemotherapy treatments. Moreover, in April of 2006 researcher Dr. Pratima Nangia-Makker of the Karamanos Cancer Institute discovered that Holy Basil actually exhibited the same effect on breast cancer cells as chemotherapeutic agents. That is, it slowed, or stopped the growth and progression of cancer cells, inhibiting their malignant spread. For stress, exhaustion, depression and, or cancer I suggest three 500 mg. capsules per day

Korean Angelica (decursin): Used by the Koreans for centuries as a pain reliever, this resourceful herb has a plethora of anti-inflammatory medicinal compounds. It is a superior medicine that mediates pain through the central nervous system, but as an anti-inflammatory it has a variety of applications. It not only aids against the inflammatory effects of arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, asthma, blood clots, and migraine headaches, but with the recent discovery that cancer is an inflammatory disease, modern researchers are now focused on Korean angelica's main anti-inflammatory ingredient, decursin as a potential cancer fighter. Furthermore, some of its antioxidant compounds appear to protect the brain from the development of Alzheimer's plaques. For anyone suffering from arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, or cancer I suggest: 2-3 Jarrow Formulas Pain Relief capsules per day.

We live in an exciting time. We are just beginning to re-awaken to the reality that Mother Nature has provided us with a number of safe effective solutions for whatever ails us. I encourage you to further investigate my top 5 natural power medicines, but don't stop there the miracle of medicine is all around you!
