Colorectal cancer is nearly 90% preventable because it develops from polyps, grape-like growths on the lining of the colon and rectum that may become cancerous. The screening tests can detect polyps so that they can be painlessly remove before they ever become cancer. Nearly 147,000 people were diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2003 and about 57,000 deaths occurred.
