Tips to Help Children with ADD/HD Succeed in School

School can be difficult for any child, but it is especially difficult if a child has ADD/HD. Children with ADD/HD have difficulty organizing, managing their time, focusing and pro-actively channeling their energy. However, there are many things that your child may be able to do to minimize some of the challenges of ADD/HD. Here are some tips to help your child succeed in school.

Spend time teaching your child how to organize themselves. Binders with labeled separators will help them. At home, have labeled storage compartments.
Teach your children how to break down large assignments into small assignments with individual due dates. This will help make projects more manageable and prevent procrastination. Encourage your child to present their work after they complete each mini- assignment.
Try to minimize distraction by seating your child in the front of the class. In addition, minimize noise when they do homework.
Help your child manage their time. Buy a calendar with time slots for each day. Help make a weekly balanced schedule that includes social time, homework, family time, etc. Use highlighters to differentiate each type of activity.
Encourage your child to channel their energy effectively. Allow them to engage in sports and play outdoors. If they need to do homework, suggest taking 5 minute walks every 20-30 minutes to help re-focus their attention.
Most children with ADD/HD have a creative side. Encourage your child to find their individual productive outlet for their creativity.
